Where do I begin.....

PictureWhen I hold a LUA puppy in my arms, I hold the future well-being of this breed
Where do I begin….the beginning ?  My life with Dalmatians began in December 1968 age 11 years when my father bought me a 7 month old untrained puppy... I loved this dog so much I wanted to learn everything I could about this wonderful breed, so I bought the book 'The Dalmatian' by Catherine Gore. This set light to something in my soul even at such a young age. It was something to this day that I cannot explain. The hunger for knowledge grew more and more. I found the references to old pedigrees and dogs to be of compelling interest. I entered the world of dog showing in 1970 attending some local shows with my dad.

In 1978 I registered my own kennel name TYRODAL and have been actively involved with Dalmatians ever since.

Tyrodal has produced many champions and CC winners, including working Road Dog Champions, over a long period of time.

I am dedicated to breeding for health and made a conscious decision 10 years ago to educate myself in the science of genetics to further improve the health of Dalmatians, in an endeavour to address our breed’s specific health issues! But...still breeding top quality Dalmatians. My motto is... THE TOTAL DOG.... show quality, healthy genetics and with sound temperament. I am lucky to have the support of my close friend..Dr.Elizabeth Sampson (Dalstorm Dalmatians) who has proved to be a tremendous asset both to me, in continuing my breeding ethic, and to the breed in general. Her scientific background has enabled her to learn the finer points of the breed, good breeding practice and the world of showing, all of which can take many breeders a lifetime to learn. I am very proud to be her mentor. We work together on our " TOTAL DOG "  breeding programme.

Over all these years my love and interest in the breed is just as strong and my thirst for knowledge even stronger. I constantly research genetics and find the science of genetics and what good breeding practice can achieve, compelling subjects. I feel too many of today's breeders are stuck in the 19th century. Why, when we have the science of the 21st century to do better for our breed? I do not understand why anyone would accept a health issue as being "part of the breed”. To me, being a breeder means you strive for improvement in all aspects of the dog and its well-being. I strongly believe health testing MUST come at the top of the list to allow a breeder to be called ‘reputable'. Pedigree dogs have a limited gene pool that continues to diminish. We need to make sure that the dogs we breed from now have the best genetic health. Only by doing this now, can we give our breed a place in the future.
